Following the devastating floods of 2022 that ravaged communities in Southern Nigeria, RedAid Nigeria started another humanitarian project aimed at alleviating the plight of those most affected, supported by DAHW (German Leprosy and TB Relief Association). With a focus on Ogbaru LGA in Anambra State and Ogbia LGA in Bayelsa State, this initiative seeks to provide immediate aid to flood victims while championing environmental hygiene and sanitation (WASH).
Southern Nigeria has been plagued by annual flooding, wreaking havoc on communities and displacing countless families from their homes. The years 2021-2023 witnessed some of the worst flooding in recent memory, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. In response to this crisis, RAN humanitarian project was launched to address the urgent needs of those affected.
Project Objectives:
- Immediate Humanitarian Aid: To provide crucial assistance to victims of the flood disaster, offering support to vulnerable households facing displacement and hardship.
- Environmental Hygiene Promotion: To promote good hygiene and sanitation practices in flood-affected areas, mitigating the risk of waterborne diseases and improving overall community health.
The project commenced with a series of preparatory meetings and advocacy visits to community leaders in Ogbaru and Ogbia LGAs, garnering support and laying the groundwork for intervention. Community committees were formed to facilitate the selection of eligible households, ensuring equitable distribution of aid to those in need.
A total of 600 households, identified as the most vulnerable, were selected to receive assistance. Each household was provided with cash support totalling One hundred thousand naira (N100,000), disbursed in two instalments, enabling families to purchase essential food items and meet their immediate needs. The impact of this support will be assessed through a post-survey, gauging the effectiveness of the intervention in restoring stability and resilience to affected households.
In addition to providing immediate relief, the project prioritizes long-term solutions through Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities. Pre/post assessments of WASH practices are conducted, followed by the distribution of essential materials such as soap, water guard, and disinfectants. Community sensitization initiatives to educate residents on proper water purification techniques and emphasize the importance of environmental cleanliness will be carried out using social behavioural change materials.
As the project unfolds, it exemplifies the power of collective action and compassion in times of crisis. Through targeted interventions and community engagement, hope is restored, and resilience strengthened in the face of adversity. With continued support and dedication, we strive to build a brighter, more resilient future for all those affected by natural disasters in Southern Nigeria.
